The works of Yuko Mori have been described as having “a girly style”. However, this is only one aspect of her art practice.
If you look at her work closely, one work follows on from the other and each work involves reversal and inversion of elements which appear at times to float above the surface.
There is no perspective in this dreamlike world of Mori’s for the various restrictions of the real world are no longer valid.
Mori strives to express dreams as a motif on the limited plane surface of a square canvas.
Viewers must abandon preconceived notions of what constitutes a painting if they are to freely abandon themselves within the two-dimensionality of her work.
The paint flows down the canvas as if to represent our dreams and hopes, and every day emotions, reaching every corner in a gentle and non-threatening effusion filled with happythoughts and feelings which are both vivid and slightly erotic, as if we are peering into Mori's mind.

MORI Yuko Works 2011

Musical art
From the pictorial world of Mori, I receive the impression that the picture is singing. The picture, constructed by many overlapping and vibrating strokes of brush, seems analogical to the grains of sound making the air vibrate harmonizing and overlapping themselves, and finally playing a song.
The brush catches concrete objects, but as it dives in to a picture with a very emphasized touch of the brush, they are raised to a higher level of abstractness.
Being unstable and at the same time keeping fine form is one of the characteristics of Mori, and possibly it is the part of her that gives the paintings the impression of being "singing".
This "singing" and "music-playing" pictures brings some warm relief to the observer and, on the other hand, offers, among a harmony of phantasy, a glimpse of cool uneasiness and sentimentalism.

The autonomous world of the picture
In the spring of 2011, we held a solo exhibition of Yuko Mori, titled "The pendulum of Foucault and the Coriolis force".
The "pendulum of Foucault" is a tool that serves to show the rotation of the earth visually, and "the Coriolis force" is the inertial force that makes the pendulum rotate.
It is possible that the reader has seen this metalic pendulum which in a slow manner but constantly, swing at museums.
When one confronts this pendulum, the viewer has the profound feeling of touching a corner of the absolute principles that makes "this world" go round.
In the "The pictorial world" of Mori, everything moves with a different order of that of the real world, and can be said to be a "pendulum of Foucault" for another different world. Id est, the observer is able to feel the an autonomous and self standing world that underlies the work.

The scene that extends inside the frame of the painting, while being a different world, still has some resemblances with the world where we live.
The stuffed head of a deer, a ceramic doll of a young man, a box with a ribbon, etc, and on the other hand, flowers of every color, or spores that floats ignoring any gravity. They are all like natural objects, but at the same time look like some formal decoration in the picture, creating a new space inside the canvas.
The world that Mori constructs basing on concrete elements of the world without any logical connection and the inner fantasy of the artist is sometimes so whimsical and free that is difficult to think of it as a real existing world, but there is somewhat strange in the work that makes us feel that it actually exists as a parallel world to ours.
This is definitely Mori Yuko’s biggest charm; a solid world constructed from the full use of human subjective originality and imagination.
