今回の個展のタイトルでは、なぜか山羊がカタツムリになるのです。

哺乳類がより原始的な軟体動物に出世する　というこのウイットに富んだ意味深なタイトルの真意が作者の口から直接語られることは無いかもしれません。

いや、もちろん軟体動物じゃなくてもいいのです。カエルでも、カラスでも、ウシでもいいのです。外側はその時々の姿であって　特別でもない、何物でもない　何からでも自由になる“精神”の在り様が大事なんだということを、たぶん示唆しているのです。

熊谷の作品制作には、どこにでもある画材、素材を使用しています。それは、気構えたり、大仰に準備が必要、といった制作上のちょっとした頸木から外れて、しがらみのない自由闊達な作品が生まれる要素でもあり、創作活動が、ほかの仕事、子供と一緒するワークショップ、日々の生活などなど　の日常と共にあることの表れでもあります。

また、あっけらかんとして、物憂げな風情で隠されていますが、実は熊谷晃太の作品には色んな問題提起を鏤めていたりします。でもハッピーに収まっていくんだという楽天主義的な純朴さで、見る者に前向きな気持ちを沸かせてくれるでしょう。
そして、熊谷の表現を改めて見つめ続けるなら、時と共に、その“意味”がじんわりと沁みてくると思います。

Somehow the exhibition is titled as that a goat becomes a snail.

The meaning of the title, which is the mysterious and witty one because mammal mustn't success to primitive mollusc, may not be explained by the artist directly.

It is OK if the word 'mollusc' was not used, of course. Frog, crow, cow, anything will do. The appearance is a temporary thing, so not the special one. The title may have the meaning that it is important to have the state of 'the spirit' belonging to nothing and free from everything.

When KUMAGAI creates works, he uses the material that is familiar with us. This is a factor of birth of his works so free, refusing some restrict in creating such as hesitation or need of exaggerate preparation. This is also an evidence that his act of creation is being together with his other job, workshop with children and his everyday life, and so on.

In fact, KUMAGAI Kota's expression keeps various question-posings and they hide them with melancholic taste as if nothing had happened. However, they will provoke our positive emotion by providing us with optimistic simplicity. We expect the happy finale.

If we continue gazing KUMAGAI's expression, we will make a deep impression of 'the meaning' with time.
